The quality of this is great! The blade isnt as sharp as I would have wished it, but hey, you cant get everything. My only complaint is that the functionality is a bit less than expected. The blade wiggles a bit more than I would expect, even on light hits...

The reason it wiggles on contact is because it is made out of carbon spring steel, as apposed to regular carbon steel. This is because if the blade were to be completely firm it would snap like a twig upon a hard impact.

this sword is awsome i am an avid user of swords and pratice frequently. I have found a good style to use with this blade ( more like a combination of styles) This blade is the best i have ever wielded. It has a remarkable speed capability, the lengthened hilt gives it a much better control of leverage and balances the monstrous blade to a miligram. The blade is acually not supposed to be super sharp; a blade like this should be used with the pull back method used with a katana the sort of rip in half whatever the intial slash cuts into. The wiggle is do to the full tang and as explained before is an acual sign that the blade was made by people who acualy wanted to use it as a weapon. Without the wiggle it would burst into pieces. The carbon spring steel assures you that it will not break with the flexibility the blade has. This is a full contact weapon and could be used in a true meji era sword fight.

The Masamune is a truly impressive sword.

Despite its size it is not hard to wield and is very well balanced. The gigantic handle is its most useful feature giving the user a much greater degree of leverage upon an opponent.

The blade is sharp but not razor sharp, but if you ever felt like maiming cows though I’m pretty sure you could pull it off.

The sword does wiggle on impact, but not dramatically, and without this wiggle the sword would snap from the impact.

If you consider that the katana was designed for a user of only 4-5ft in height this sword is a much more realistic size for a person of 6ft 4in like myself.

p.s. please dont maime cows with this sword, its not big and its not clever

A fine piece of quality work. Definately a nice addition to any collection. Maybe not up to the almost mythical status of the great sword maker Masamune, but still a great sword.

This Masamune is INCREDIBLE! It has a worn battle look about it, very sturdy, very tightly wrapped leather. This sword is HAND MADE, the blade is HAND FORGED. You will not find "Made in Taiwan" or China anywhere on this sword. I couldnt have wished for better. Also the scabbard is magnifficent, as the picture doesnt show. I reccomend this sword to any type of sword lover, whether you are in to medieval swords or what have you, and of course if you have the money for it. It is more than worth the money. Also, the wobble isnt nearly as bad as the other reviews say, though I havnt tested it out full strength. Absolutely grand sword!

I was silly enough to buy it from another site and pay more.
By my ancestors I wish I had my time back.
This sword is truly amazing, it's elegant in it's simplicity.
The tsuba is sturdy and feels like it actually could save your hands and the hilt is wrapped in cooked leather.
Out of the half a dozen or so swords I own, this is probably the only one I'd actually go into battle with.

Whew....that thing is HEAVY!! I don't care, however, because the Masamune (ma-sah-moo-nay) is the single most well-crafted sword I own as of now. It just arrived today and i couldn't be happier. There were these pesky 1 1/2 inch thick sapplings by my house....not anymore. while the Masamune isn't as sharp as advertised the sheer massiveness of the blade knocked the sapplings in half. truly a beautiful, powerful, legendary sword! $300 is well worth your spending to own such a weapon.

Unfortunately, i do not own this item but i have heard many stories about it. I have seen this spectacular blade in action in some home videos and it is amazing (it is comparable to a Zanbato). This may sound stupid but i do find the Blade a little short for the handle given. Either way i would love to own this sword someday!!

the masamune is of excellent quality especially for the money. however, you are not paying for the performance, you're paying for the look and the stories. the sword is a nice weight, however i think it feels a bit light for it's size - being about 5'5

the blade isn't very sharp like everyone else is claiming, the reason for it possessing sharp-like qualities is because of it's size and weight.. the way you would handle it would need a bit of strength as well as the combined weight of the sword to maneuver it properly.. all of this put together makes it seem like the sword is very sharp when it isn't

however, from what i've seen, it is a very strong sword and can take a beating. it lacks sharpness but it makes up for it with size, weight, and the strength needed to use it. the sword is also flexible so there's no need to worry about it breaking anytime soon

With swords online carrying Clouds Buster sword From Final Fantasy 7 . This is the equalizer with Sephiroths famous massamune shown in this beautifully crafted weapon. The "one winged angle" theme should play whenever I see this sword. I am constantly amazed by this website I feel even though I don't own it (yet) I still spledor this sword through my friend having one. God bless the final fantasy fan who decided to make the pair of these blades.

I feel that this sword is a great sword to show off and also a great one to have by your side durring a ren fair. The only thing that I would like to see with this sword is a way to carry this sword on you while walking. Like a back strap that you could unbuckle. Other then that I think it is a wonderful sword and a key peice to my large collection.

First, lets start off with some history... The odachi was origionally used by the samurai to kill both a mounted soldier and his horse with one blow. Its tremendous size made it almost useless in one on one combat due to the speed of the normal katana. It was still very effective in battle, though. It definately wasn't held like a katana. It was held to the side with the point and the weilders strong shoulder facing the opponent.

I am very pleased with the quality of the blade. It is very sharp, but it isnt exactly razor sharp. It doesnt need to be. Its enormous. The leatherwork is very nice and the fittings are solid.

The only two things i didn't like were the red tassles (a bit cheezy looking with the rustic brown. easily fixed) and the fact that the saia still has some sawdust in it. Other than that, I love this sword and strongly recommend it.

i met a fellow swordsman a few months back. he has an Odachi. im not sure whether or not he purchased it from this site, but it looks almost identical to the one shown in the picture. its a full-contact weapon, not a displayable toy. used more like a slashing spear than a sword.
also, to clear a few things up, other reviews are calling this a masamune. while both swords are about the same size, the masamune is more blade than handle. the odachi is more handle than blade. Sephiroth used a masamune, not an odachi

A friend of mine has this sword and I've seen it used versus a more typical katana. The sword is very impressive and takes quite a bit of skill to wield correctly (my friend won't even let me touch it *cries*). If I bought one I would definitely want to try and learn to use it with some finesse, as it would be a huge waste just to have it on the wall looking pretty (though it does that very nicely too).
For those wondering, the normal katana doesn't really shape up to this at all, but then that's a given due to the large difference in terms of reach.

To clarify for other people, this sword is in no way related to Final Fantasy. This sword was originally created by a sword maker /called/ Masamune (do an internet search), Sephiroth's sword from Final Fantasy VII (which I have ordered from this site) is called THE Masamune, the name is a homage to the sword maker but it is in no other way related. This (the Odachi) sword is based on a real sword by Masamune, the other is a fictional sword CALLED the Masamune. Hope that helps out anyone who is confused.

I am writing this in resoponse to another review about the swords history mainly because it\'s interesting.(for others to know, I do know that the odachi was used againts mounted opponnents, and that this is neither a masamune or a muramasa)
In feudal Japan there were two master sword smiths, Masamune, and Muramasa, both were said to be the best sword makers in the country. It is said that just from someone testing the cooling water of Muramasa\'s forging, he cut off the man\'s hand. The Tokugawa shogunate wanted to find out who was actually a better smith, so told each to forgre their greatest sword, and bring it to him for a test. They did so, and for a test the shogunate had each put their masterpiece, blade up, under a water fall.
(This is fictional by the way, noone knows whether or not it\'s actually true). Muramasa\'s blades were said to cut each leaf that touched them cleanly in two, however, Masamune\'s blade was untouched by a single leaf, they all flowed around it, no matter how long it was held there.
As a result of this, Muramasa\'s blades were thought to have some evil property, and the shogunate had his entire family killed, and Muramasa\'s blades were banished from use.
In actual history, the shogunate did have Muramasa and said family killed, however it is said to have been done because numerous assassinations were made on the shogunate and his family with Muramasa\'s blades. I personally like the fictional lore better, but the latter of the two reasons is probably the true one.
For those of ou who are wondering, I haven't seen the sword, but read reviews on it alot, and am going to buy one if ever I have the extra money. I base my opinion from reading the reviews.

I just got the Odachi today. I would say that it was worth the wait. This sword is so strong. I will use it to train, but if you are not strong I would not suggest this sword for training. Also it's display ability is amazing. The Odachi has great functionality and display ability. So if you arn't going to use it, you should buy it just to look at. It is a great sword. :-)

When I received the box that delivered the Odachi to me, I was shocked at the size and weight of the package. When I actually had it out of the box, I was stricken with a serious feeling of power. The shear massive stature of this weapon is awesome. The steel is nearly flawless, as are the fittings. The leather wrap (other than a few glue spots) is such a cool effect on ths weapon... I wasn't expecting as much spring in the blade, but I read that it helps reduce the risk if snapping the blade (which makes a lot of sense). Over all, I would say that this is a great blade, and recommend it to any collector. It totally dwarfes my other katanas...

PS... My only real complaint would be the balance of the weapon. It seemed too hilt-heavy.

ive had this sword for quite some time now, long enough to build up strength to use it one handed (yes, it is possible, you need a small amount of upper body strength to do so). mine had a slight edge, about enough to kinda cut the cardboard it came in. i put a pretty good edge on it with a few stones and a diamond sharpener.

a few things to note:
1. it is massive this is not something you can swing around in a 15 X 15 foot box.
2. it is heavy for the weaker folk! the sword may weigh 6 pounds but when you put the 40 inch blade infront of you the weight increases slightly and will throw you off balance if youre not agile.
3. it is EXTREMELY well built and durable. the leather on the handle may start to peel slightly from use but its easily fixed with a small tack. the blade doesnt go all the way down the handle but is solid and doesnt wiggle at all inside the wood (stops about 5-6 inches after the tsuba - tsuba seems to be pinged high carbon steel or iron painted black, sturdy none the less).

~a story that smarts~ i have quite a few large trees around my house that drop some sizable limbs during storms. one day i got one about 3 inches thick, stood it up and took a good level strike at it. luckily for me the edge was in-line and cut the limb clean in half. a few months later i found the same limb and figured id try an upward angle cut (which by the way is a much easier and makes a smoother cut on hardwood) so i swung with the same strength and speed i did before only this time the edge caught the wood wrong, flipped the blade sideways and left a nice 20-30 degree angle within the last ten inches of the blade, doh! got a hammer and pouned it back straight and its fine now with just a few hammer marks and the edge has a slight wave to it still.

this sword is more of a parry/kung-fu sword since it is made of carbon spring steel which is flexible but doesnt stand up to real damage very well. edge-edge contact with a sword of any metal is NOT recomended and this blade *will* notch very easily. buy it for looks and shock value, and of course cutting up cardboard and wet wood would be fine too. keep it clean! CSS gets little black spots on it if neglected. good beginner sword as well actually, the strength you will accumulate in your arms will help you wield smaller swords much more effectively. if you get enough momentum behind the blade you can cut through almost anything except metal, and yes it is handle heavy in the sheath and wont sit well on your back unless you weigh the sheath down with something. i find chains work well and make it look cool as the sheath itself is somewhat plain. f.y.i. this is basically a large 1 handed katana and cuts with a sawing or slicing motion not hacking at stuff with it. enjoy!

Although I didn't purchase this blade through this website, the one I own *is* the one offered here.

Seeing this sword in person, and picking it up in your hands is something that few words can describe. With a lot of swords, you get the "sharpened" stick feel to it... especially the wobbly, made in Pakistan stainless steel models: But not this one. The Odachi is a piece of art with a fine history backing it.

Gripping the TIGHT leather-bound handle, you hear the satisfying sound of skin streaking over the material. Expose the blade, and you see (and due to the full-tang nature of the sword, feel) the stability and craftsmanship. Everything about this sword really places a power into your being... it's size compared to its weight is nearly incomprehensible, and using it on various surfaces (such as wood or meat) shows that the carbon steel has very little give or flexibility to it.

Meaning, chop as hard as you like, but keep a firm grip: This sword isn't going to jump away from you or snap like others might.

My only complaint is that the strap that comes with it is easily the cheapest part of the production, similar straps being sold on mere $30 replica blades... but I'm certain that a few extra dollars and some searching could give you a far more suitable (and practical) replacement.

Blow out the sheath when you get it... it tends to leave a bit of dust on the blade. The blade is nowhere near as sharp as it could be, and unless you are proficient in sharpening your swords, your best bet is to take it up to a professional and have them take their time, lest this fine blade become fouled.

I just got this weapon via UPS today. It took around two or three weeks to get it. Not bad service, I must say. It came in a hella big box all packed nice and tight so no complaints there. Sorry folks, I cant say that I chopped up a bunch of crap with it. I've spent a long time studying the samurai and the code of bushido, so I know better than to treat this splendid weapon like a baseball bat. If you teens and pre-teens out there want to whack stuff and chop stuff with edged weapons then go buy an axe, not a Nodachi, or any other of these Katanas on this site. According to the codes of Bushido, the sword was the soul and the status of the samarai. It was the symbol of a man's rank and a tool to kill. Folks should really go out and get a proper education about these weapons before they buy them, and understand that any katana is not a toy. Otherwise martial art weapons are going to be in the same boat as firearms, because of the people who misuse them. Anyway, the Nodachi(the proper name according to 'Secrets of the Samarai by Ratti and Westbrook) as sold on this site is a magnificant weapon incredibly large in stature. It was sent already oiled, and really sharp. Despite its massive size it feels like it was made for my hands. My form-work should be a real hoot with this monster, and I feel truly honered to finally posess such a wonderful weapon. This is this first sword that I have baught from this site but it wont be the last.

I have been in training for 2 years now and I fancy myself as a reliable person when it comes to knowing about swords. I have a freaind who has bought this sword and i have personaly tested it and i have found this wepon to be almost compleatly flawless i do have to argree that the metal could be a little stronger and it dose need to be sharpend every once and a while but what sword dosnt. So for all those thinking of buying this sword I beleave you will be quite satisfied with it. I would also like to add that the person who wrote the first feedback on this page is very knollageable about the samurai and swords but the fact that you would just let any kind of sword to just sit around for people to look at is a waste of the wepon yes a samurai should respect any one of his swords with the upmost respect and dignity but I would like to add that using any sword to cut trees or plants or anything like that is fine but always becarful when using any kind of wepon becuase weather you think so or not these items can cause seriose damage to you and your suroundings so always handle with care. I hope you all enjoy your new sword have a great day.

I bought this sword and was absolutely amazed by its power. The way this sword is blanced (front Heavy) makes it perfect for the offensive fighter. It takes some practice to get used to it, but once you master it you'll be hard to beat. This sword is extremely sharp and durable. I have never failed once to wipe out a practice target in one shot. I would not name this weapon an \"odachi\" It is much, much more similar to the Nagimaki used in feudal japan, by horsemen and against them alike. Now this thing is not quite a Nagimake, its blade is too long, but other than that, it is very similar.

This reminds me of the Belegarth group I'm in. Everyone has to have the biggest sword, and when they lose to me (and my 45inch sword where as most others use a 5-7 foot sword) they get mad and make a bigger one. I'm personally fond of larger swords, and this one is very well crafted. I wouldn't however go so far as saying this is the best sword ever. I don't think it would hold up to well in battle (I'm the devils advocate I know) but it is pretty to look at. It's sephiroth esque and everyone loves sephiroth (well everyone but those Aeris worshipers). I like the leather wrap (but I prefer japanese cotton). If you want to look like a badass get this.

I have mastered 8 styles of martial arts and 10 styles of swordsmenship. Over these 11 years of training i have faught with training swords and real swords. Real swords do bring a great risk of pain, but if you complete your training you will learn to move faster and think 30 movements ahead. Yes i have destroyed coutless swords in my training. But an old saying i was taught in my training is the day a sword is made it has a death day. Nothing in the world can stop a sword from breaking one day time will get to it if you just leave it laying there. Use a sword to it's full power if it breaks give it a resting place and get another one. A true warrior is never tied down to just one weapon. No warrior stays with one weapon for one day it shall break. This sword held up great in my harsh fighting styles and danced in my graceful styles. Truly a sword to remember.

Ok, I dont' have this sword just yet, but I plan on getting one. There's something I'd like to clear up with misconceptions about Masamune and Sephiroth. The sword that Sephiroth has, while dubbed the Masamune by Square Soft (as they were called at the time) it would not be a true Masamune sword. If you notice, there is no hamon on Sephiroth's sword, an obvious trait that subtracts from its name. Another thing is that while Masamune did make odachis, he also made many katanas and tantos; however, there is this common misperception that a really long katana should be called a Masamune. And one more thing about Sephiroth's sword. Sephiroth's sword is more like a Muramasa, as evil as he is.
