Functional, durable, and simplistic, a good set to own. I have been using these swords for quite some time now, they do tend to bend if they hit something at a crooked angle, but that can be fixed easily.

I got this set just before Christmas and I absolutely fell in love with it. The swords are just beautiful, and the thorough use of them gave me a preference for swords that lack hand-guards (zatoichies, shaskas, ect.) The sharpness was a little disappointing, but an hour or so with my whet stone and the katana became very sharp.

When i first got this set it looked nice and perfect but after swinging it it got really loose ....so i took it appart and replaced the wooden pegs with metal screws. It works nicely now maybe even full contact use..im just not for sure yet. If your willing to fix the stupid small tang and the wooden pegs its a great sword to own.

there seem to be several shirasaya sets on this site... I own alot of swords, and dai-sho and study swords and form techniques extensively. All you kiddies say the same thing:
"the blade wobbles, fittings get loose" (and what's up with everyone spelling AIDO wrong? and an aido sword is a DAITO, NEwayz...)SHIRASAYA in japanese means 'resting case'. You see, a samurai or diamyo would often have several different sets of fittings (or koshire)for a blade. The shirasaya was like pajamas for the blade of the sword and the koshire would have a wooden blade in them instead of the shinken (live blade)... Shirasaya are made of soft wood and NOT suitable for any kind of tom-foolery... if you wanna play with it, have the blade re-fitted. EXCEPT this particular set is a PUSH (or half) tang construction. The short tang is less than 1/2 the length of the handle and has a rounded end, and it's prone to working it's way loose... I hope we all learned something.

Sorry to tell you this Nick but shirasaya means "plain scabbard" and the samurai used them to conceal their swords when wearing swords was banned. Now these ones in particular are so-so they are mostly for display or practicing forms maybe light parrying of another sword.

I'm sorry, John, but that isnt entirely correct. The Shirasaya translates literally into "Resting Scabbard". Mark is pretty much correct in his description of the weapon. it is not meant, as you say, to be a concieled weapon. It's too obvious for that, anyway, being perfectly sword-shaped. Nobody'd believe a grown man to be walking about with a bokken, anyway, without being suspicious.

This set is very basic. it has no tsuba and a plain wooden handle just like a bokken. I Do kendo so I know what im talking about when i say you should never swing a sword carelessly THEY ARE NOT TOYS even a bokken can kill, thats why we use shinai so we dont injure each other. The Shirasaya was very very simple and when sheathed it is almost identical to a bokken. Also anyone who complains about "the blade wobbling" should know that a "Good" Sword will cost way more than 60 bucks and a "Good" sword would cost over $100. so I would only recomend this set to a collector.
