A genuine, fully functional full tang Reverse Blade Katana! This Japanese style reverse blade katana features a traditional hand braided cord wrap, with inset four dragon menuki, shimmering silver fabric diamonds a steel tsuba and pommel. The sharp function high carbon steel reverse blade is mounted with a traditional copper habaki. The scabbard on this reverse blade katana is hand made from wood, and covered in leather.
For those unfamiliar with the Reverse Blade Katana (also known as a Sakabatou or Sakaba), the sharp side is opposite where you would normally expect it, while the normal cutting side, is the wide unsharpened portion of the blade. The idea behind this is when striking your opponent as you would with a normal sword, when using the reverse blade sword the opponent would be stunned, not cut. As this Reverse Blade Katana is a real sword, great care should be taken as hitting someone could cause serious injury, even death!
This high carbon steel reverse blade is hand pounded and forged over hot coals, using many of the original techniques passed down through the generations of ancient sword smiths. The tsuba and end cap are individually hand cast in steel with a traditional solid copper habaki hand fitted to each 27" x 1-5/16" blade. The overall length of the reverse blade sword is 38". The diameter of the tsuba is 3-1/2". The workmanship put into each sword attests to each sword being an authentically fully functional original work of art!
Featuring a black nylon wrapped tsukamaki over an antique white menuki, the tsuba and kashira are bronze finished with the relief castings of Koi, Crabs, and gentle Manta Rays.

I am a big Kenshin fan, I purchased this sword before they updated the pictures, kinda disapointed with the sharp edge of the weapon or rather the lack of a sharp side, it kinda looks like a unsharpend sword then someone just raked the back side of it over a grinding wheel, and was not to happy with the satin finish, ok enuff of the bad stuff.... this sword is STRONG AND HEAVY probably the strongest katana i have seen to this date the Hilt is very strongly secured to the blade the pomel and wrappings are tight, a very tight wood scabbard also covered in leather a nice feature, I recommend getting this sword just for the sake of owning a reverse blade sword, but look at the new reverse blades first and also its kinda plain so if someone is interested in sword design it would be a good template or maybe even something to modify.. thanks for putting up with me 8x)

I am overall pleased with this katana with minor exceptions... it would have been nice to see at least a false temperline on the "sharp" side. The second being this weapon's edge. It is barely sharp at all. I do not see how this could qualify as having a "very sharp" edge. Otherwise I am pleased. I've had this weapon for many months now, and the only damage to it was from an accidental encounter with a marble table, and amazingly the marble was more damaged than the sword. The blade is very secure in to the tsuka. The traditional wood saya was also a nice touch.

My friend collects Reverse Blades. He is very skilled in the use of them. I have seen many times though, someone knock back a blow, with a stave, from the blunt end and it strike him. The reverse blade is not to be trifled with. If you intend to use one, get the handle of a normal, or even a wooden training sword. You may hurt yourself going straight into a reverse blade. This one expecialy is very sharp, and very well made. It will take a blow, but you must know how to control it. The shape, and exact curve in the blade make it easy to handle if you are used to one such as this. The hilt is comfortable and well wrapped. If you are into competition with more unique weapons, I highly suggest this. Just take caution.

For god sakes, it's a sakabatou, it doesn't need to be sharp (hence why it is a reverse blade katana, so you CAN'T cut). I think this sword is awesome! My friend owns it and let me see it. You really shouldn't complain about it's bounceback, you're in all liability to yourself and if you don't know how to use it then it's your fault. Anyway, this item is handmade so it's not surprising if every sword is different (ex: sharp, not sharp, etc.). The sword is attached very well and I can't wait to get one of my own!

The reverse blade katana is just an impressive weapon to look at, very sturdy, sharp and fits well in the hand (or at least my hand). The main reason i got the sakabatou is that i am a big fan of Kenshin and was looking for a weapon that could be used in a full contact fight, not that I am planing on fighting with it, but it just feels great knowing you could protect your self with the sword, if you know how to use it.

I put this on my X-mas wish list, y'know, one of those things you oogle and wish for but don't actually expect to get. Imagine my surprise when I learned a bunch of my friends pooled their cash to get it, knowing that I am a complete Rurouni Kenshin fanatic, and that any Kenshin fanatic worth their salt drools over the idea of actually owning a sakabatou.
I adore mine- it fits my hand well, and I daresay that the way it shines when I finish wiping it down simply beats the tar out of my stainless steel mass-produced katanas. The feel of it is much sturdier than the mass-prods, it FEELS like something you could actually use in combat. (Not that I would, but I have been working on my battou-jutsu..... ^_~)

very sturdy sword. its sharpness is average, but still enough to cause a fatal wound if handled incorrectly. the weight alone basically says, "im designed for combat situations". very nice. buy one. also, some people have questioned its usefullness because it can be deflected back at the weilder. if used like a standard katana, which cuts into or through objects, this will deflect back. keep some stiffness in your wrists with this for more control after a clash with an object.

I started my sword collection with this one because I like the idea of having a sword not meant to be fatal (not to the other person anyway).
This weapon has definately passed the sharpness, quality, and finctionality tests for what it is said to have. If anyone is planning on buying one of the reverse blade swords on this website, this is the one to get. And yes for all of you kenshin fans, it does resemble kenshins sword very much.

I just got this sword today, and I must say that it is very nice.
It's the first sword i've ever bought for myself, and i'm glad it is.
The quality on it nearly perfect.
However, it was not quite as sharp as i had hoped, but I have a friend that professionally sharpens blades for a living.
The sheath is a nice combination of a thin black leather, covering a wooden interior.
And though it does look similare to Kenshin's sword, it has a few differences.
I would still recommend this to anyone wanting to purchase a reverse bladed katana.

This is a well crafted traditional weapon. i witnessed it being forged from molten steel to the exceptional end product which is an amazing traditional yet funtional Sakabatou, one thing that got me about it was the fact that it had not one but two menukis under soft cotton cord wrap which adds greatly to its appearance and make it look like a true work of art and craftsmanship. as for its functionality if you want a sword as sharp as a razor blade, cuts like a machete, and is as beautiful as a katana... folks this is your sword!

This sword was pretty good for its price. It is of course not going to be the most highly crafted blade for only $186 but it is usable and fun. To give an example of its shapness, I was able to easily cut down a 4 foot bush with three cuts. Unfortunately, I tried cutting a box and it only dented and put a little bend in the cardboard. Sharpness is not the most important aspect of this sword but it makes it more exciting. I rate this an 8 out of 10... This is definetely worth the buy. If you like swords and you want one I reccomend this as your FIRST.

The only thing I dislike about this sword is, the sheath it could have been better but other then that it is perfect! The blade is indeed razor sharp. I gently rubbed my finger along the sharp side and it cut my finger open. ;-; The blade is tightly secured to the handle and it doesnt move around or clank when swung. Well, today was the day that this sword arrived. I immediately tore open the box and found inside the sword, sheath, and a cloth carrying bag similar to what actual Katanas are peacefully transported in.
First off, the sword comes with quite a bit of grease on it. Secondly, the sheath isn't really up to par with the sword itself; it's too large, and it's sometimes hard to put the sword back inside. I would suggest finding yourself a custom-crafted sheath if it really bothers you.
But the sword itself is masterful. Perfectly made, it doesn't rattle at all and is balanced quite well despite its slightly heavy weight (to be expected of a sword that has a thick unsharpened section on the business side). The blade on the back is sharp enough to cut you if you run your finger along it, but I don't know about cutting through a tree in one swing. I don't think so. I am truly amazed at the craftsmanship... it's a work of art, and makes you feel quite powerful as it's held. I made no mistake in purchasing it, and you'd be keen to do the same if you have any interest in the famous Sakabatou... yes, I mean you, Kenshin fans!

Oh the reverse blade katana is a sword only known by legend, with that said it's hard to say how good the relplication process was. Reguardless, the sword is beyond that of many, and I am unable to recall a reverse blade anything close to this type of quality. The other swords offered do not match the exquisite fashion of this sword. The pictures are unable to match the regal appearence of this sword. The blade is unbelieveably strong, the hilt as well as the tsuba are well secured. All of the parts are connected in an unfathomable design, the blade just breathes elegence. The sword, personally of course, does not have any faults, however the sheath I believe does. It is very simple, which is adequate, however I believe the sheath is not a proper fit, it is rather large compared to most, but the feature that pushed me over on the sheath was that during a sheathing, the sword does not go in with ease, as do my other swords. Overall the sheath is the only thing that may be improved upon.
The sword as many have said strongly resembles the former Hitokiri Battousai's (Shinta/Kenshin Himura) Reverse Blade Katana. This sword is quite possibly the best Reverse Blade Katana that anyone will ever see, therefore I recommend it with great confidence.

I'm a major Kenshin fan, so this sword was a major must-get for me. This sword is 99% perfect in my opinion. The blade is very fineley carved and its a very stable metal, very sturdy and it will not break easily as would my stainless steel regular katana. This sword can be used definateley for full contact, just don't overdo it. As you all probobly know, overworking a sword could dent it or harm the blade (like if you smash up a bunch of strong metal unless you know what you're doing...) and if you hit something hard hard enough, the blade could break and injure you- but for this, thats least likeley. This is good for everything you need.

this is a great addition to any sword collection, while not exactly like Kenshin's that can always be change at least with the scabbard. I'm not find of how there is not edge line on the backside blade. Word of advice to you people who have no experience with this kind of sword be careful. i have seen idiots hit something with a boken and have a nailed themselves square in the face. if you want this for practice, do yourself a favor and practice with some thin wood beams or order a practice sword. i find that even though i have this blade i rarely use it and spend most of my time with a wooden one any way

I know someone remarked that the blade did not have a temper line, and someone else said that blades from the Philippines were of high quality. Well, the truth is that the materials that use are of high quality (this blade is most likely High Carbon 5160 steel, which is exceptionally strong and durable) but the way the forge it is not. They say spring steel because these forges recieve their steel from truck springs, and if they are not properly tempered, they still have some "memory" and can crack in want of rebending. There is no temper line because 5160 C steel is notoriously difficult to make a temper line on. I am rather dissapointed that the blade I recieved was chipped, and that the sheath (saya) scratches the copper habaki. But even with these few misgivings, it is an impressive blade for the price, and one of the best reversed blade katanas available right now.

I got this sword today and im quite impressed. The sword is solid, no rattling like my last one, and the habiki and tsuba are firmly attached. The shord is VERY sharp, as I cut my thumb when I was cleaning it (it has alot of extra greese on it). I took a couple of practice swings on the box it came in and needless to say, i destroyed the box. ^^;
Like some of the previous reviews mentioned, the saya is kinda cheep. The sword had a tendence to catch the side of the scabbard when it goes in. the leather work on it is also a bit stingy.
In all, its a very good buy if you want a full contact sword.

Well, I got this sword to spar with a friend, and really needed something high quality. I got what I needed. The whole sword is great, but the sheath is fairly poor quality. It also comes too heavily oiled, so it needs cleaning right away. If you can accept these tiny flaws, this sword is well worth the money. I got this sword ahwile ago and I would have to call it an excellent buy. I was not at all dissapointed with the funcionality or sharpness of the piece, its very sturdy and well balanced, the blade shows signs of hand forging, and none of the fittings are loose. In addition I accidently cut my finger while cleaning it. AND I JUST BRUSHED AGAINST THE BLADE...LIGHTLY! my only real complaint is in the fittings and saya. The tsuba, was painted instead of being blackened, so the edges have some of the paint worn off. Also, the tsuka ito (handle wrap)is stapled to the handle instead of beinng tied traditionally, which unfortunatly lets the end fray. No complaints on the kashira,(end cap)or menuki, but the absense of seppa and fuchi hinders the overall look of the sword, the saya could also be better made, the inside was so poorly treated that it flakes off on the blade. But honestly, over all, not to mention for the price, this thing makes an AWESOME funcion peice, a great sword for those who cant just leave it on the wall!

I liked it, it's a sturdy sword, but there were some aspects to it that made me think "well, you get what you pay for". There were a few small brownish rust-marks on the blade when I got the sword, which look like fingerprints. The saya is cheap-looking, -feeling and ugly. The tsuba and kashira were also ugly (but that's expected already by the pictures.)
Now, having said -all that-, the sword is weighted fairly nicely (although, without the fuller, it's heavier than my others), and a lack of mekugi also means the lack of loose pegs holding your tsuka together :D Good sword, I'd love something of a more quality sakabatou though, with an etched wave and a more quality saya.

Well first off I have to say that when I buy a sword I have every intention of testing its strength and using it regularly. I've owned the Reverse Blade Katana for 4 months now and I still haven't managed to break it yet which is good. However the handle is getting shakey which is the first sign that it is going to break at the handle, like almost every other sword I've ever had does. The blade is very strong, a direct hit against the Lucieander Sword of Light left only a small knick in the katana (blade side) while leaving a nice chunk out of the Luci's blade. When hit against a concrete wall it had no problem, a knick was left in the blade but it didn't snap or falter on the hit. In summary, the handle needs work, the blade and connection from the blade to handle are very tough, the weight is too light for my preference, different people prefer different weight though. I have yet to make a single dent in the blunt end of the blade! (wow)

The blade was decently sharp, but I felt the need to sharpen it to a better edge. The sword is surprisingly light and sturdy, and has a great feel to it. I will be ordering this item today in a short while. It will be my first and most favorite swordsonline.com purchase because I am a major Rurouni Kenshin fan and use the Hiten Mitsurugi style (not at god-like speed of course). Currently I practice with a normal katana that I was given as a gift a little more than a year ago, but like my inspiration, I don't want to kill people, but rather use the Hiten sword style to protect my friends. This is a superbly crafted sword i have had the chance to wield one of these swords unfortunately i am used to fighting with the Niten Ichi Ryu sword style which involves putting your left hand on the back of the blade to push their blade away and thrust. Also to the Kenshin fan who said he uses kenshins style your heart is in the right place but learn a real style as that one doesnt exist the world needs a few good warriors to defend the people.

Only one word to describe this sword, please see the title for it. I've been waiting two years to buy this, and I've finally got enough money to do it. The only thing I was slightly disappointed in was the sharpness of the blade. I got it today and am happy to say that I've fixed how sharp it was, and am proud to say that i could probably shave with it, if I so desired.
On a side note, the Tsuba had a greenish substance on it, I was not too happy to see it at first, but wasn't quite so agitated when I saw that it was easily removed.
Overall, this is easily the best sword I've bought to date. I now own eight swords, and this is the best without question.
Kenshin fans: Definitely worth the money. I've known about Kenshin since I was in middle school, and have always enjoyed his style and the uniqueness that came along with the idea of owning a Sakabatou.
Thanks so much, Weaponmasters, I truly appreciate the terrific quality of this blade.

this sword is almost a perfect buy it is completely battle ready sword. It's very sharp on the back and the front is blunt of corse u knew that i would hope i dont have much to say other than the blade is perfect the handle is nice but the sheath is realitively bad the blade does get stuck sometimes but such a good sword for the low price makes up for that .My best freind owns the sword and has one occasion cut himself when he wasn't paying much attention he did even notice until someone told him and is barely touched him i guess that gives a slight indication of how sharp the sword is!!!

this is a really nice sword it is very well done
there are no lost parts, very well secured, metal kashira, hard steel tsuba and really hard tsuba, its a hand pounded blade so..mine came with 3 brown spots.. they dont affect the use of the sword.. but they affect its looking, anyway its a great katana it can resist a good swing of any other sword, the saya looks good.. but its not.. inside it, looks like its very bad done.. but i think its ok..
the weight is great just like 3 pounds maybe a bit less.. and size is the ideal one
another good thing about this sword is that you can hit another sword without damaging the edged side, while the other sword does.. ^^ thats really good.
finally its a great sword for the price it worths it really
so if u want a cheap sword, funciontal.. this one is for you !

If this sword was a car, I'd only drive it in the winter. No dought this piece can take a beating, probably several. I must say that this "blade" is "over rated" in the apperence, and sharpness, but not in it's funtional ability to do damage (massive damage) and the quality in witch it is put together (very solid). Anything you might hit with this sword is very likly to be completly destroyed. As others have said, the sheath leaves something to be desired. All things concidered, I'm happy I bought this sword. Besides, everyone needs a winter beater! LOL...

I was reading these reviews and i dont even know what the heck that kenshi stuff is. but this sword caught my eye, and im thinking about getting into it. The sword itself was pretty good but the tip of mine is brown. Its from the saka (which by the way is complete and total crap). But i used a little bit of Metal Glo which i also purchased from this site and it came right off. The sword is light and you can beat the hell out of it. i wanted a sword that can survive full contact use and thats what i got. I'm satisfied

Just got mine about a week ago, and after some basic examining and testing I would say that I am impressed. there were a few flaws in the blade, like near the tip it was quite un-evenly etched in. Also the sharpening is very lop-sided (as you can feel it from one side but not the other) Over all it could have used a bit more careful work but was indeed finely crafted and held up well turning some old furniture into firewood. All in all, i would say for its price, that this is indeed a great buy.

Like many others have said, the saya/scabbard is rather poor, but at least functional unlike other products I have purchased. It's not really suited for iaido. ;)
The blade itself is not at all perfect, but is pretty much exactly the quality I expect for the price paid. If I take a close look and really examine it, I can tell that it was pounded out a bit, but not with any fine care.
As a whole, I'd say that this is a good buy for the money, and like many have said before, especially if you're a Kenshin fan.

I used to spar a lot with an old friend, and he got this blade. I was overal very impressed at the sight of the katana. He told me it was alright to test it with sword against sword combat, despite the great work he did to keep the blade preserved. I took my odachi against his Reverse Blade just like we would with any of our demo fights, and I was amazed at how well he could parry my attacks and barely blemish the blade. It is an extremely durable and reliable sword. In the hands of a skilled user it can be very painful but still non-lethal. Props to the maker of this wonderful blade.
Also, don't try the Kenshin stuff. Anime moves stay in anime, lord knows you could slit your wrist with some of that stuff.

I just recieved this gift in the mail, and I have to say that it is truly a wonderful blade. Doesnt feel too heavy, even though the weight is lop-sided depending on weither youve got the blunt or sharp edge pointed forward. The sharpness, although im a bit reluctant to test it on anything thats too dense for fear of it breaking, is good enough to shave hair (got a long bald patch on my arm because of it). Overall, this blade is a wonderful work of craftsmanship, except for one small flaw - the sheath. Every time I pull the sword out, it's covered in small wood flakes from inside the sheath. Also, it took a while, but the copper hilt sorta 'jammed' in the sheath for a while, but I quickly remided that by repeatedly sheathing the sword and loosening the grip it had. Still, aside from the slightly sub-par sheath, the sword more than makes up for it. Very wonderful blade and I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of katanas or Kenshin ^_^

As a Kenshin fan, I've been looking for a good reversed blade katana for awhile. This sword is exactly what I wanted. A fully functional, not so fancy sword.
At first I thought the sword would be lighter but it is quite heavy compared to my other steel sword. One thing I have to say is that the sharp side is VERY SHARP. I wasn't careful while wiping the blade and accidentally cut myself, twice.
Overall, a great sword. If you wish to get this, use CAUTION, I repeat USE CAUTION when handling this blade or any functinal blade.
Remember, this is a WEAPON for COMBAT. BE CAREFUL.

Just as they say, it is full contact, though I have to say, the pictures do it some justice. I cut straight through about an inch thick tree branch with it and that was the cleanest cut I've ever made with a sword. I think the sheath looks a lot better in the pictures, and the sword doesn't always go into the sheath easy, but for this price, it's worth it. Over all, it's a great sword.

Let me start by saying i\'m no sword expert, but I know what im looking for. Even though this is the nicest sword I own it is by no means perfect. The worst part about the sword is the saya(sheath) its a hunk of crap. I plan on having a new sheath made soon. Other than that its a extremly nice sword. Its also fairly light im scrouny and I use it with one hand all the time.
P.S. Great for any Rorouni Kenshin fans everywere I know im one.

I have to say that this is one of the best Sakabatous i\'ve seen in years. Unlike those cheap flimsy ones this one is Full Tang and has a decent edge to the blade, But the downside to this Sword is its Saya \"Sheath\" its just a really light piece of wood with leather glued on it that can proberly break if your really reckless with it, But other then that i High recommend this Sword to anyone whos a collector or to any Rurouni Kenshin fan.

I\'ve recently recieved this weapon and I must say that I was not dissapointed. The blade is durable, the back edge is sharp, and it seems like a fine weapon. My only complaints are that the sword is fairly loose in the saya, and the sword is a little blade heavy, throwing off the balance by about three inches. Otherwise it is a great sword for the price.
